Dublin: in a city of layers, future overlaid on present, past echoes resonate faintly, surprisingly. Beneath the gleam of the new, some relics remain, weakened but still intact, people and places both.
The old basement rehearsal space on North Frederick St was one such site – in existence beyond historical 'scene memory', forever there; dingy, damp, unlovely perhaps, but always cheap, welcoming, open. Home to many bands over the years, some known briefly by the outer world, most forgotten. Last bastion of a lost fight, it closed its doors for the final time recently, another sacrifice to development. But what faint traces, we wonder, might continue to vibrate after the new office workers leave, in the long twilights and the hours of the lost chords?
Clearing through the accumulated detritus of broken equipment, band bric-a-brac and general junk before the builders came in, one exciting, unlikely fossil emerged – this tape you hold in your hand, the only known recordings of the mysterious, utterly obscure Pastry Boys.
Of course we’d heard that they'd practiced here too, back when Dublin was a big town not a small city but beyond that we knew nothing. No biographies, no names, no entries on any databases; just rumours, evasions, uncertainty. Was it true that they had originally been named the Page Three Boys and shared a bill with the Black Catholics? True that they split after their drummer went into a diabetic coma during a gig? Credible that some of them are still around, making music, going nowhere? We don’t know.
What we do know is we are proud to release this tape, re-mastered from the original four-track recording. Pastry Boys: Above Us Only Pie is available as an ultra-limited cassette and unlimited download, only through Bandcamp.
If any of the Pastry Boys or their loved ones are out there, get in touch with Eats It, we’d love to find out the facts. The Battenburg is on us.
